What is Abilify?
Abilify is a brand name for generic Aripiprazole. Abilify Aripiprazole is a prescription medication classified as an “antipsychotic” drug. Antipsychotic drugs can change chemicals and chemical actions in our brain that affect how we think, act, and move, etc.
What is Abilify used for?
Abilfy is typically prescribed by doctors to treat symptoms associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression.)
Abilify is also prescribed in combination with other medications to help alleviate major depressive disorder, primarily in adults.
What is Abilify approved for?
In the United States, Abilify has been approved by the USFDA (Food and Drug Administration) for the following uses:
- Approved on November 15, 2002 for treatment of schizophrenia in adults and adolescents (aged 13-17)
- Approved on October 1st, 2004 for treatment of both mixed episodes and acute manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder in adults and pediatric patients (aged 10-17)
- Approved on November 20, 2007 as an adjunctive in the treatment of major depressive disorder
- Approved on November 20, 2009 for treatment of irritability in children with autism.
What is Abilify’s effect?
Abilify helps to block the action of some of the excess amounts of dopamine and thereby reduce both positive and negative symptoms associated with schizophrenia.
